PARTICIPATING BREEDERS
MATADOR RANCH
Matador Ranch lies primarily on the Rolling Plains of West Texas, although the western edge touches the Caprock (or High Plains) escarpment. Matador Ranch is a 130,000-acre working cattle ranch that supports about 3,700 head of commercial cattle annually, along with Quarter Horses.
Matador Ranch has been known for its quality Hereford cattle for many years. Today, we breed Hereford and Angus mix Black Baldy cows, which are paired with Charolais cattle to produce that much sought-after “smoky” Charolais cross.
Our horse-breeding focus is to produce quality horses with outstanding cow ability and that are able to traverse the rugged terrain of the ranch safely. Providing quality horses for our cowboys to safely conduct business is a major goal for the remuda.
We take great pride in our horse-breeding program, and in 2013, we were honored to receive Best Remuda from the American Quarter Horse Association and AQHA Corporate Partner, Zoetis.
A long-term focus is applied to preserving and protecting the land at Matador Ranch. Our many land stewardship efforts include improving the grazing system. We’ve developed several miles of pipeline to move water where it is needed, implemented rotation grazing, and established strategic fencing practices. We also conduct prescribed burns to eliminate invasive plant species.
The success of our stewardship practices have been recognized by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department’s Lone Star Land Steward Award.
Other land stewardship honors include:
-
Outstanding Rangeland Stewardship Award from the Texas Section Society for Range Management/Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association
-
Regional Winner in the Environmental Stewardship Award Program sponsored by the Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Dow AgroSciences, National Cattlemen’s Foundation, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association
-
Koch Industries’ 2012 Environmental Health & Safety Excellence Award
